The daily grind is awesome

This is me (and our resident Hello Kitty) in my office with the most gorgeous Jasmine, who makes my work day so so so good. We have the same ridiculous sense of humour and I don't know how I'd get through the day without her. Everyone in our office is AMAZING.... The Level 4 crew of 658 Chruch Street Richmond is really a fantastic group of people. I feel so lucky to have a job that I love coming to every day where I get to paint and draw and hang with such good people while working on big fun projects together. Loving my job combined with having just moved into our very own apartment north of the Melbourne CBD makes for one happy Fleurie right now. Just need Summer to hurry up and get here now, I'm done with this Winter!! Life is good. xxx

Illustrators Australia 9X5

In preparation for the IA 9x5 show, I have been working on a new illustration, hand painted on timber. The theme of the show this year is "Untold Stories". Mine is going to be a pretty simple image, but hopefully a powerful one. It's basically a Birka, smoking like a volcano. I can't see how the continued mistreatment of women in certain parts of the world can continue to be tolerated, so this picture is reflective of that. I'm not going to bang on about my political and moral viewpoint on this issue here, so I'll let my picture do the talking. I'll post the finished piece when the show opens, dates and venue etc to be announced.

Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey
artist

ABOUT: Armed only with a few sheets of Xeroxed sticker paper, artist Shepard Fairey began his art career on the street poles and abandoned buildings of Providence, Rhode Island. (RISD grad’92) In the process, he created an artistic phenomenon, as his “AndrĂ© The Giant Has A Posse” sticker campaign evolved into an iconic image known as “Obey Giant,” propelling him to cult-like status. Shepard used the image in his politically driven work for nearly 20 years, making it hard to imagine that he’d ever be known as anything but the “Obey Giant” guy. But then in 2008, Fairey created a poster of a Senator and presidential hopeful from Illinois. Today, that man sits in the Oval Office, thanks to a campaign that included Shepard’s now-famous blue-and-red “Hope” screen-print. And while Fairey takes pride in that project, it’s also drawn criticism, most notably in an ongoing battle with the Associated Press over image usage. But with all the attention, good and bad, one thing is apparent: Shepard Fairey has a posse, and it’s growing. Fairey recently spoke to The A.V. Club about intellectual property, getting arrested for art, a job offer from Hummer, and why some people love the underground for the wrong reasons.
Since then everything has gone steep uphill for Fairey. He now displays in many museums of contemporary art and sells out his limited edition prints within minutes.
